Antoinette talks to us about the effort required to take care of natural hair, home-made hair masks, and her staple protective hair style.
On her personal hair experiences:
“Being from Ghana, my natural hair is afro but most of my childhood I had relaxed hair. I always remembered the silkiness of my hair after a fresh relaxer - it was almost addictive! As soon as I was old enough, I started experimenting more with my hair. I was a fan of trying out new colours, extensions and cuts. Of course, this took its toll and all the tension damaged my hair so I cut it all off at 15. I've 'big chopped' (cut all my hair off) twice since then, the most recent being when I was at university. I'm finally at a stage where I never want to touch another hair relaxer because I'm learning to love my curls. Natural hair is hard work but you just have to figure out what works for you. I'm personally a huge fan of protective styling, particularly wigs - so that's what I do on a day to day!
On her favourite product:
As I am cowash - this is a new product I have discovered and I don't think I can turn back now. It is the perfect way to wash/cleanse your hair without using a harsh shampoo. Not only does it leave my hair clean and moisturised, it also smells absolutely amazing. Another product I can't live without is sweet almond oil! My hair is thick but my strands are fine so heavy oils tend to weigh my hair down and leave a lot of build up. I've found that sweet almond oil is the perfect consistency for me.
On experimenting with hair care:
I love a good deep conditioner, hair mask or protein treatment. When you have fine hair strands, it is so important to strengthen them as much as you can through products you use. I have a secret recipe that I'm going to share with you. One egg, 1 tbsp. of plain greek yoghurt, 1 tbsp. of olive oil, 1 tbsp. of eucalyptus oil and 1 tbsp. of sweet almond oil. Apply the mixture to damp hair, leave for 10-15 minutes and rinse out with warm water. This is the best protein deep conditioning treatment I have tried - thank me later!
On her bedtime routine:
As wigs are my go-to protective style, I usually have cornrows so that makes bed time routine super easy. I just oil my scalp and wrap my hair with a scarf to keep my braids nice and tidy.
On her ultimate haircrush:
My ultimate haircrush of all time would have to be Solange. She’s care-free, isn't afraid to experiment, but most of all, I love that she uses her hair to artistically express who she is.
