Natural should really mean natural and with the growing desire for transparency with brands people are becoming more aware and questioning what exactly they put in and on their bodies. Harmful products and ingredients have been marketed to the black hair industry for years, relatively unchecked, but these brands are making what we hope is a lasting change for the industry for the sake of our health. Plant based products with ingredients you can actually pronounce, details of where and what their sources are all while maintaining eco friendly practices and we are so here for it!   1. Big hair + beauty

    Born out of sheer frustration, failed twist outs and confusion, even after watching countless YouTube videos, Big Hair + Beauty sets itself apart from industry fads, artificial fragrances and toxic ingredients. Healthy hair should also be a lifestyle and a ‘commitment to healthier curls, kinks + coils starts when you decide that what goes on your body is just as important as what goes in it’ says its founder Melissa. Transparency in the ingredients including, but not limited to, aloe vera, sweet almond oil, bananas and avocados are well explained and listed on their site.

2. Obia naturals 

“Natural Ingredients for Natural Products” is what vegan brand OBIA Naturals prides itself on. The pH balanced, non-toxic, herbal-based brand began when founder Obia Ewah went natural for health reasons after recovering from an illness and becoming cautious about what foods and product she was putting in and on her body. OBIA Naturals promise that the entire line is vegan and cruelty-free do not contain: mineral oil, sulfates, petroleum, artificial colors, drying alcohols, silicone, or gluten and they promote recycling!

3. Flora & Curl

Flora & Curl champions three staple products: hair mist, hair oil and hair butter which, along with the entire line, use ingredients derived from plants and of course smell divine due to the layered notes of flower, herb and fruit blends. This botanical brand launched just a year ago and its founder, Rose, makes her vision clear in wanting to create a brand with ‘products that were not watered down by harmful substances or fillers, but were powered by real ingredients found in nature.

4. Anita grant

After a serious reaction to a hair product Anita Grant created her brand in a desperate need to to find something that could work for her and what started with just vegetables, olive oils and seeds found in the kitchen has expanded into coconut syrup, sea salts, organic cocoa powder, corn starch, and arrowroot powder, ingredients good enough to eat. So its not surprising that the line sports a deep conditioner that looks like a bar of chocolate! Buying directly from farming communities, partnering with fair trade and organic suppliers, Anita Grant’s hair and skincare range is definitely a fave

5. Jim + henry

The Jim + Henry brand burst on the scene championing their first product: EIGHT, a leave-in conditioner which boasts: ‘The UK’s first leave-in conditioner comprised of only eight ingredients’. And they mean only eight all natural ; Organic Ghanaian Shea Butter, Vitamin E, Corsican Rosemary, Roman Cammomile, Mandarin, Aqua, Emulsifier, Green Preservative. They have since added more to their line with no more than ten ingredients in any one product!

6. Bouclème

After noticing how weighed down and moisture stripped her curls were from using silicone based hair products, founder Michelle wanted to create products that result in frizz free curls without having to sacrifice the health of her hair and body. Using plant derived ingredients, Boucléme has products for all types of curls, kinks and coils that promise to define and repair and also defer to the Environmental Working Group making sure to keep their products as clean as possible. They also plant a tree for every 300ml bottle sold and that package design is so satisfying to look at!

7. the afro hair & skin co.

Co-signed by Vogue, The Afro Hair & Skin Company have a great beauty philosophy and ‘specialise in providing high quality green beauty options to meet the unique needs of afro textured hair in all its forms as well as skincare that addresses some of the concerns that come with having melanin rich skin’. Using high quality sustainable ingredients in their pure form, there is honesty in their all natural products that will not be a danger to your health or the environment.

8. Afrocenchix

The multi-award winning Afrocenchix brand co-founded by Joycelyn and Rachael began like many others; out of frustration in finding products that actually worked for afro hair. Set about creating natural healthy products they were ‘kind to people and the planet’, they blend natural and organic ingredients working with UK scientists. Raw materials are ethically sourced, encouraging sustainability means farmers and support Fairtrade and an informed and detailed list of all plant based ingredients is available on their website.
